Pruned my neglected fig tree, 3 months later it's full again

Picked up a house in Portland last fall with a fig tree buried in dead branches. Cut out maybe 60% of it back in March, scared I killed it. By June it had new shoots everywhere, thicker than before. The trick was making clean cuts at an angle right above the buds. Anyone else rescue a tree that looked totally done for?
