That time I tried growing orchids on my kitchen windowsill

I bought my first orchid at a grocery store in Cleveland about 6 months ago. It was a plain white phalaenopsis and I honestly thought I'd kill it in a week. Three months later it dropped all its flowers and I almost threw it out. Then my neighbor told me to just leave it alone and water it once a week. Now it's got two new flower spikes and I feel like a proud parent. Anyone else have a plant they thought was dead that came back?

Is it really that serious? You almost threw out a perfectly healthy plant that just finished blooming which is what orchids do. They drop flowers, go dormant, and come back like it's their job.

Throwing out a plant just because it stopped blooming is a huge waste when you think about how many people can't even keep one alive for more than a few weeks. Most orchids go through a rest period and with some basic care and patience they will flower again stronger than before. Seems like a quick decision to toss something that still has plenty of life left in it.
