Thought bonsai needed daily pruning, then killed 3 ficus trees and finally listened to the guy at the Denver show
I used to trim my ficus every single morning because I thought more cuts meant faster ramification, but it just stressed them out and they dropped leaves nonstop. A grower at the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society show in Denver told me to let branches run wild for 6 weeks first, and the trunk on my latest one doubled in thickness. Anyone else here had luck with the let-it-grow-then-chop method on tropicals?

Killed three ficus before listening to a guy at a show, that's a solid way to learn. My tropicals finally stopped dropping leaves once I quit hovering over them with scissors every morning. Six weeks of wild growth really does fatten up the trunk, who knew.
