Unpopular opinion: Monstera deliciosa is way overrated for beginners
I know everyone pushes monsteras as the perfect starter plant, but I think pothos or snake plants are miles better. I had a monstera last year that got root rot after 3 months even with careful watering and a decent pot. Meanwhile my golden pothos from the grocery store has been thriving for 18 months with basically zero effort from me. Has anyone else had better luck with simpler plants over the trendy ones?

My monstera is literally unkillable though, it survived my underwatering and a cat attack lmao.

Oh wow, I totally get where you're coming from. My first monstera was a disaster too but then I switched to a terracotta pot with a chunky soil mix and now it's the easiest thing I own. Sometimes it's just about finding the right setup rather than the plant itself.

Right?? I swear it's all about the pot and soil. My monstera was this sad, droopy mess in a plastic nursery pot for like six months. Then I repotted it in this ugly terracotta pot I found at a garage sale with some orchid bark mixed in and suddenly it's pushing out leaves every week. My friends joke that it's my only successful child. The only way I've managed to mess it up since then was when I left it outside during a random frost last spring, but even that only killed a couple leaves. It really does feel like once they click, they're basically indestructible. I mean, I've forgotten to water mine for three weeks and it just gave me a slightly droopy leaf as a warning, lol.
