Choosing between a 4-inch and 6-inch block for a garden wall last spring

I was building a curved retaining wall for a client in Oak Park and had to pick the block thickness. The 4-inch was cheaper and faster to lay, but the 6-inch felt more solid for the height and soil pressure. I went with the 6-inch, and it took me an extra day and about $300 more in materials. The wall hasn't budged an inch after all the spring rain, so I'm glad I did. Anyone have a good rule of thumb for when you can safely use the thinner block?

Check your local frost line depth first.

That "hasn't budged an inch" feeling is always worth the extra cost.

My old couch from college slid halfway across the room if you sat down too fast. You're right, @sarah_patel25, that solid feel is priceless.
