Had a client in Phoenix ask for a 12-inch thick brick wall for a garden feature last week. They said it needed to 'feel historic'.

I argued it was overkill and a waste of material, but my partner said to just give the customer what they want. We ended up using a double wythe with a cavity, but it felt wrong. Do you ever push back on a design you think is just bad building?

Ever notice how this happens everywhere now? Like when a cafe near me put in a massive stone fireplace that blocks half the seating, just because someone saw it in a magazine. Or my neighbor paying to have his entire driveway repaved with bricks that crack every winter. It feels like we've stopped asking if something makes sense and just do whatever image pops into our heads, no matter the cost or waste. Where did that basic sense of "is this a good idea" go?

Remember when people used to fix things that were actually broken? I used to want all the fancy upgrades, but seeing so many pointless "improvements" has made me miss basic common sense.

Sometimes the extra material is what makes a project special.
