Heard a masonry inspector say this one thing about weepholes and it stuck with me

I was on a job in Tacoma last month, doing a brick veneer over a storefront, and this old inspector walks up, watches me lay a course, then says, "You can't see a weephole from the sidewalk, but you sure can see the damage when they're missing." That really got me thinking. I've always just spaced them out every 24 inches like the plan says, but I never thought about what happens when they get clogged with mortar droppings. He showed me how he runs a rod through them after the wall is up, just to clear the line. Took me an extra 15 minutes but I've been doing it on every job since. Anyone else have a routine for checking weepholes after the mortar sets, or do you just trust the bricks to breathe?

Man, I read that clogged weepholes cause way more wall rot than folks realize.
