Hot take: I tried laying brick with a rubber mallet last Saturday and the wall taught me a lesson
I was on a small garden wall job in Akron and my 3 lb hammer went missing, so I grabbed a rubber mallet out of the truck thinking it would be gentle on the brick faces. After 20 minutes of tapping, the bricks were sitting about an eighth of an inch proud and wobbly as anything, so I pulled one up and the mortar bed was completely untouched underneath. A guy walking his dog stopped and said "that mallet ain't doing nothing but polishing them bricks," which honestly was fair. Wound up redoing the whole first course by hand with a chisel and my backup hammer, and the wall finally sat level. What do you all keep on the truck as a spare when the main hammer walks off?
