mortar mix ratio change after 20 years on the trowel

I switched from a 1:3 mix to a 1:4 with lime for a restoration job in Portland last month. The old mix set too hard, cracked three corners on a parapet wall. Anyone else find lime makes a huge difference on older brick, or am I overthinking it?
