Old timer's comment at a supply yard made me rethink my mortar mix

I was loading bags at the yard in Tulsa last month when a retired bricklayer watched me grab a Type S bag and muttered that I was building sandcastles for the next generation. He spent ten minutes explaining how the lime ratio in his 1980s jobs still holds up better than half the modern pre-blends I use. Has anyone else had an old-timer change how they batch, or do you just nod and keep doing your thing?

That "sandcastles" line would've stung me too, but honestly it shook my stubbornness loose. I used to swear by pre-mix all the way, now I'm reading lime ratios on the bag like a damn chemist.
