Picked a 4 inch trowel over my 5 inch one for a fireplace job in Reno and now my wrist hates me
So I had a small fireplace surround job in Reno last month, about 60 sq ft of thin brick. I usually grab my 5 inch trowel for everything but the mortar was stiff and the joints were tight, so I went with the 4 inch thinking I'd have more control. Big mistake. I was spreading in these little 2 foot sections and doubling my trips back to the board, and my wrist was screaming by lunch. Took me 9 hours to do what should've been a 6 hour job. The guy I had helping me kept saying just switch back but I was too stubborn to walk to the truck. Ended up with one joint that's a hair off cause I got tired and rushed the last course. Next time I'll just thin the mortar a touch and keep the bigger trowel. What do you all do on tight fireplace work, size down or just mix wetter?
