PSA: That old timer at the supply yard told me to soak my bricks before laying them in hot weather

I ignored him last July on a 95 degree day and the mortar dried so fast I had three cracked joints by lunch, has anyone else actually tried the soaking trick on a big job?

Soaking bricks just makes them swell and crack later.

Didn't you end up with a weird powdery mess on the surface after a few days lol?

OH NO, my buddy Jen tried that with some old pavers she found on Freecycle! She soaked them in a bucket for like 4 days and then set them out to dry. On day 2 a white crusty fuzz appeared on the top, and when she touched it, it just flaked off like dried up salt. She ended up having to scrub each one with a wire brush before she could even use them.
