Saw a 90 year old wall in Old Town Alexandria last weekend with mortar joints thinner than a dime
I was walking around Old Town Alexandria last weekend and stopped at a brick wall from around 1930 that was still holding strong. The mortar joints were maybe 3/8 inch and tooled so clean I had to get close to even see them. Meanwhile the new build two blocks over has joints all over the place, some fat enough to stick a pencil in. I know lime mortar and old brick behave different, but it got me wondering how much of it is the mix and how much is just taking your time. Any of you ever tear into walls like that and figure out what they were doing right?
Mortar joints thinner than a dime" really says it all, huh? I see this same thing everywhere, not just walls. Furniture, clothes, cars, nobody takes their time with anything anymore and the whole point is just to get it done fast. Those old guys probably spent their whole day on a few feet of wall and it's still standing 90 years later.
