Snapped my string line on a 40 foot wall in Gary and had to rebuild the coursing halfway up
Two weeks back I was laying a 40 foot garden wall out in Gary, the kind of long straight run where you live or die by your line. About 14 courses up, my old string line popped right at the hook and the whole run went slack on me. I had been using a braided nylon line that had dried out and gotten brittle from sitting in the truck all summer. I walked the wall and found 3 courses already drifting, maybe a quarter inch out over 10 feet, which does not sound like much until you step back and see it. I knocked off the bad courses down to where it was still true, reset a fresh line, and laid it back up wet, which cost me most of a Saturday. My granddad would have used cotton line and restrung it every spring, and I used to think that was just old guy fussing. Now I am wondering if he was onto something. What do you all run for string line, and do you swap it out on a schedule or just wait for it to fail like I did?
