Talked to an old timer at the supply yard and he changed my mortar mix

I was picking up a pallet at Builders Supply in Nashville last Tuesday and this guy in his 70s saw me loading type S. He just laughed and told me to switch to type N with a little lime for the old soft brick I was using. I always figured stronger was better, but he said the hard mortar would crack the faces over time. Has anyone else had a old timer at the yard tell you something that made you rethink your whole setup?

Yeah that stings a little... but at least you heard it from a nice guy instead of finding out the hard way a few years down the road. @the_anthony is right though, better to know now than after a bunch of cracked faces show up.

Gotta admit that hurts a little when you realize you've been doing it wrong. But at least he caught you before the cracks showed up.
