That $80 laser level turned out to be a fancy flashlight

Picked up a cheap rotary laser off Amazon last month thinking it would speed up my footing layouts. Spent two hours setting it up on a job in Dayton, only to realize the self-leveling was off by a half inch across 20 feet. My buddy Dave walked over, squinted at it, and said 'that thing's just glowing, not leveling.' Went back to my water level tube and finished the wall in half the time. Anyone else get burned by bargain laser gear or do I just have bad luck with them?

That $30 torpedo level I snagged from a flea market in Columbus still reads true, so I feel your pain. My neighbor Jerry bought one of those cheap digital angle finders for his deck project, and it told him his slope was perfect when it was actually pitched like a ski jump. Rainwater pooled at his back door for two weeks before he noticed. He used a two-foot stick and a washer on a string to redo the whole thing. Sometimes the old junk in your truck beats the new junk from the internet.
