The awkward moment when a friend thought bricklaying was just stacking blocks

Last Friday, I was at a buddy's house for a game night. He pointed to his crumbling garden wall and said I should fix it for a six-pack. I told him it's not that simple, you need the right mortar mix and tools. He laughed and said it's just like Lego for adults. Everyone else chuckled, but I felt my face get hot. I had to explain the whole process, from foundation to finish, and he still didn't get it. Now things are weird between us because he thinks I'm being difficult. It's frustrating when people don't respect the skill it takes to lay bricks right.

That "call it art" line hits home. When your friend called it adult Legos, did it feel like he was calling your potential work a joke before you even started? Do you think he would look at a truly crooked, falling wall and still call it art, or would he finally see the difference between stacking blocks and actual craft?

I'd probably stack bricks crooked and call it art.

Tell your friend to grab that six-pack and have fun with his adult Legos. He'll be calling you within the hour when his wall looks like a drunk toddler built it. Some people won't respect the craft until their own project is falling over. The good news is he'll probably pay full price for the fix.
