Took me 3 years to realize I was buttering my bricks backwards

I always put the butter on the face of the brick I was laying, not the one already in the wall. Finally clicked when my foreman pointed out my joints were pulling apart on a 50 foot wall we did for a school in Denver. Anyone else have a basic motion they were doing wrong the whole time?

I mean is it really that big of a deal though? A crooked wall still keeps the rain out, right?
