Why does nobody talk about how mortar color changes the whole look of a brick wall
I always figured mortar was just mortar, you know, the gray stuff holding bricks together, and that the brick itself did all the talking. Then last month I did a small garden wall in Savannah with a light buff brick and the homeowner picked a bright white mortar, and the wall looked completely different from the sample board we did with gray. I pulled up the Brick Industry Association's guide and found out mortar color can shift the whole wall from soft and traditional to sharp and modern, even with the exact same brick. Now I want to redo my own porch wall with a raked joint and a matching mortar, because that shadow line matters more than I ever gave it credit for. Has anyone here switched mortar colors mid project and had the homeowner freak out about the change?

Bright white mortar on buff brick? That's a whole different wall.
