Bulk dried beans seemed like a pain until I did the math last month

I always grabbed canned beans for convenience, but after a $45 grocery trip where I got maybe 5 meals worth of stuff, I decided to try a 2 pound bag of dried black beans for $2.50. Soaked them overnight, cooked them for about 90 minutes, and ended up with enough for 8 servings. The texture was way better than canned too, no mushy nonsense. Anyone else make the switch and find a favorite bean variety that's cheap?

Haha, "mushy nonsense" is exactly what I was avoiding too, but my first attempt at dried beans turned into a science experiment gone wrong. I tried to speed soak some pintos and ended up with a pot of sad, crunchy little rocks that I swear were mocking me. Your mileage may vary, but after that mess I learned to just give them the full overnight soak and now pinto beans are my go-to for cheap, solid texture.

Nah, sometimes speed soaking works just fine for me.
