Bulk rice from the Asian market vs. the grocery store was a $12 difference

I finally compared the 20lb bag of jasmine rice at H-Mart for $14 vs the 5lb bag at Safeway for $8. The H-Mart rice cooks up fluffier and lasts me three months instead of three weeks. For a family that eats rice five nights a week, the savings add up quick. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed their monthly food bill drop?

The 20 pound bag from H-Mart is basically paying for the rice and getting the bag for free at that point. I did the same math last month and felt like I was committing a crime bringing home that giant bag for $14 versus the tiny overpriced Safeway sack. My wife looked at me like I was stocking up for the apocalypse but now shes the one who wont go back to the grocery store stuff. The fluffiness is real too (not just in your head) because that jasmine rice from the Asian market actually has some life in it. That rice goes stale way before you can finish it unless you're feeding a family of six or cooking every single meal at home. I bought one bag once and ended up pouring weevils out of it after a couple months because I couldn't use it fast enough. Your mileage may vary, but for a regular person or couple, you're better off sticking with a smaller bag from the regular grocery store even if it costs a bit more per pound.
