My aunt swore dried beans save money, and after 3 weeks of soaking I did the math on her advice
My aunt in Toledo kept telling me to ditch canned beans and buy the 2 pound bag of dried pinto beans for $2.49 instead of paying $1.19 per can. I tried it for 3 weeks straight, soaking overnight every Sunday, and here is what nobody warns you about. The dried beans did come out cheaper per serving, but I burned 2 batches because I walked away and they scorched, so I tossed about $4 of food in the trash. Add in the gas for a longer simmer and the fact that a can gives me exactly one meal while the bag made way more than I could eat before they went bad. My real number came out to about the same cost per meal, just with way more dishes and planning. Has anyone cracked a way to cook dried beans without losing a whole afternoon, or should I just go back to cans and stop pretending?
