My jarred sauce wake-up call for budget cooking

I've been cooking on a tight budget for years, especially with my crew needing lunches. Lately, I see recipes calling for expensive shortcuts like pre-made sauces. It confuses me because making your own from basics is way cheaper and just as easy. Last month, I cooked up a big batch of tomato sauce from canned tomatoes and spices, and it lasted weeks. Now I'm curious why more folks don't try this simple swap.

Jarred stuff trains you to think cooking has to be fast, but that big batch of homemade sauce actually saves more time in the long run. You're not running to the store last minute, and it freezes perfectly for instant meals. The real win is getting your kids involved in stirring and tasting, which makes them more likely to eat it without a fight. That connection and skipped grocery trips are way more valuable than just the cash saved.

My little taste testers still turn into food critics at the dinner table.

You say skipped grocery trips are valuable, but that only works if you already have a big freezer and hours to spend on a weekend. For a lot of us, jarred sauce is the difference between a home-cooked meal and ordering takeout again, which is a win on a crazy week. That convenience has its own real cost savings when you factor in time and energy.
