My mom said my bean soup was 'just sad' and it made me rethink everything
I used to make bean soup with just a bag of dried beans, water, and salt. That was it. My mom tried it once and told me it looked 'just sad' and tasted like nothing. She said a good soup needs a backbone, something cheap like a ham hock or a spoonful of tomato paste. I started adding a single strip of bacon I'd fry first, then cook the onions in the fat. I throw in a squirt of ketchup if I'm out of paste. It costs maybe fifty cents more but it's a totally different meal. It actually tastes like something now. I feel silly for not doing it sooner. Anyone have other cheap tricks to add flavor without spending a lot?

Okay but it's just bean soup lol. Like yeah it tastes better now but rethinking your whole life over a pot of beans is a bit much. Glad you found a cheap fix though.
