My neighbor swore by soaking dried beans overnight to save money
Sandra from across the street told me to skip canned beans and just soak dry ones overnight. I tried it last Tuesday with a bag of pinto beans from Aldi for $1.29. They were still crunchy after 8 hours in water and 2 hours of boiling. Has anyone actually gotten this trick to work or did I just get a bad bag?

Sandra might have steered you wrong on the timing, or maybe those beans were just old. I've had that happen too, where no amount of soaking seems to soften them up. I soak mine for a full 12 to 24 hours, changing the water once, then boil for at least an hour and a half. Sometimes if they're still firm after that, a pinch of baking soda in the pot can help break them down. Don't give up on the dry beans though, the price difference is worth it once you get the hang of it.
