My neighbor taught me the truth about bulk buying spices

I used to think buying the big jar of spices at the store was always the better deal right? Then I noticed my cumin was just sitting in the cabinet for 8 months losing all its smell. My neighbor saw me tossing out half a jar of paprika and she was like "you're paying for dust at that point." She told me to just hit up the bulk bins at Winco near me and buy only what I need for the month. I spend like $3 instead of $8 and my food actually tastes like something now. Anyone else make this mistake or am I the only one throwing flavor away?

Not that deep honestly, I've had a big jar of chili powder in my cabinet for like two years and it still tastes fine to me. @wendy628 knows what's up with the big jars, sometimes you just want the convenience of not having to refill every month. I think people overthink the whole "spices go bad" thing, it's not like they turn into poison or anything.

That whole thing about spices going bad after a few months feels like one of those food snob rules people love to repeat. Realistically, most of us aren't professional chefs doing taste tests on week-old chili powder. The color might fade but it's not like the flavor vanishes completely overnight. What's the actual difference in taste between a $3 bag from the bulk bin and a jar that sat around for a year?
