My rice cooker died mid-week and I had to make do with a pot

Last Tuesday my 10 dollar rice cooker just stopped working halfway through cooking a batch of jasmine rice. I ended up finishing it in a regular pot on the stove and it actually came out fine, just took a bit more stirring. Anyone else had a kitchen gadget fail on them and had to wing it with basic stuff?

Oh man, that's the worst when a cheap gadget gives out at the worst possible time. I've had the same thing happen with a slow cooker that just stopped heating halfway through a chili. I just dumped everything into a big pot and let it simmer on the stove, ended up tasting even better.

Wait, what kind of rice cooker was it? I used to think those cheap ones were pretty bulletproof until mine started burning the bottom every single time. After a couple of failed batches I just gave up and started using a pot on the stove. Now I actually prefer it, you get way more control over the texture and it's not that much more work.

emery_white, I had the same thing happen with mine. It started burning the bottom of the rice one time and then just quit altogether. I switched to a pot on the stove and honestly, it was a game changer. I just rinse the rice well, bring it to a boil, then cover it and let it simmer low for about 15 minutes. Comes out perfect every time now.
