Our block's monthly potluck was my hack for trying low-cost meals.
In my experience, neighbors would bring dishes based on what was on sale that week. Your mileage may vary, but it taught me how to cook with less. Now, those events are rare, and I rely more on my own skills. I feel the shared tips were a big help.

Those potlucks were basically free cooking lessons. Now we're all too proud to admit we miss the free food.

Totally see that. It's like how we all pretend we're too busy for simple stuff now, but really we're just scared to look needy.

No way! Calling potlucks free cooking lessons just blew my mind. I totally picked up how to make decent mac and cheese from those things. Now we're all pretending we don't need help while burning frozen pizza.
