Saw a stat that cooking from scratch saves $3.20 per meal and it got me thinking

That $3.20 per meal really stacks up over time, but the bigger thing I've noticed is how much control you get back when you cook from scratch. It's like every meal I make myself, I'm not just saving money, I'm deciding exactly what goes in it. Grocery stores are so full of hidden fees and markups these days, it feels like a trap sometimes. Same with coffee shops, you pay $6 for something that costs pennies to make at home. It's all this little stuff that adds up to hundreds of dollars a month without you realizing it. Have you found yourself noticing other things where it's cheaper to do it yourself too?

@the_lee you're totally right about the control thing, but I gotta push back a tiny bit on the $6 coffee thing. I'm lucky if I can make a latte at home for under a buck since good beans aren't cheap and milk costs what it does now. The savings are real, don't get me wrong, especially if you're a drip coffee person. But I think specialty drinks at home end up closer to half the price of a shop than pennies. Same with bread, flour is cheap but decent yeast adds up and that first loaf always tastes like a science experiment.

Blew up my first batch of mayonnaise so bad it looked like soup and I still ate it anyway.
