A guy at a hostel in Prague showed me why my hostel breakfasts cost double
I was staying at this place in Prague last summer, paying like 8 euros for their breakfast buffet which seemed fine until this Australian dude pointed out the grocery store two blocks away. He said he paid 2 euros for bread, cheese, and fruit that lasted him three days instead. I argued that the convenience was worth it, but he just laughed and showed me his loaf of bread and some spread he made from scratch. He even let me try his coffee he brewed with a tiny travel press and it was way better than the hostel's watery stuff. That conversation made me realize I was blowing maybe 50 extra euros a month on breakfasts alone during my trips. Now I always scope out a supermarket within 10 minutes of my lodging before I book. Has anyone else found a killer cheap breakfast setup while traveling?

See, I kinda disagree here. Sometimes paying for the convenience is worth not hauling groceries around a strange city. @kim_johnson51 mentioned hostels getting weird about outside food, and honestly that stress alone makes the buffet worth it to me.

Did you check if the hostel even lets you bring outside food to the breakfast area?

oh fr I didn't even think of that, most hostels get weird about outside food in their common areas. better to check first or just sneak it in a bag if they don't care.
