Can we talk about the overnight train trick that cut my lodging bill to zero in Madrid
I booked a night train from Barcelona to Madrid last month instead of a hostel bed, mostly to save the 28 euros. What I didn't expect was that the sleeper cost 41 euros, so I was actually paying 13 euros more than the hostel, and I almost canceled. But then I realized I wasn't paying for a room for the night at all, I was paying for the ride I needed anyway, and the hostel would have been a whole separate cost. I got to Madrid at 7am rested, skipped a night of lodging, and had a full day to explore instead of losing the morning to a checkout line. My takeaway is to compare the train fare to the flight plus one hotel night, not just to the flight alone, because that math flips fast. Has anyone else figured out which routes in Europe actually work out cheaper this way? I want to try it again but I don't want to guess.
