Found a hidden hostel in Tokyo that saved me $40 a night
I was sick of those capsule hotels charging $60 a night in Shinjuku, so I asked a local convenience store clerk if they knew anywhere cheaper and he pointed me to this tiny family-run place above a ramen shop for $20 a night. The catch was no English and a shared bathroom down the hall, but the owners made me breakfast every morning. Has anyone else stumbled on a place like that just by asking around?

That part about the convenience store clerk knowing a place really got my attention. I remember reading a travel blog that said asking local shop workers is the best way to find cheap stays, way better than any app. $20 a night with free breakfast sounds like a dream, honestly, even with the shared bathroom. I bet that homemade breakfast was way better than the sad toast you get at most hostels.

Exactly. The convenience store clerk knowing a place is the real trick. I've done the same thing in three different countries now. You just walk in, buy a bottle of water, and ask the guy behind the counter if he knows anywhere cheap to sleep. They always do. The secret spots never show up online. And that breakfast thing? Yeah, homemade beats hostel toast every time. I stayed above a bakery in Vietnam once, $15 a night, and the owner's mom cooked pho every morning. Best travel decision I ever made.

Wait, the convenience store clerk just knew about a hidden hostel above a ramen shop? That's wild that he'd just tell some random tourist about it like that.
