Hostel booking glitch cost me $80 in Rome, now I always call first

I booked a 4-bed dorm in Rome through a third-party site for $35 a night, but when I showed up at 10pm they had no record of my name and the place was full. The guy at the desk told me 'you need to call the property directly after you book, these sites mess up all the time' and I had to scramble for a $115 hotel nearby. Does anyone else double-check bookings by phone now, or am I just cursed with bad luck?
