Hostel vs. hotel debate after a 2-week trip through Portugal

I always swore by hostels for the price, but after 4 nights in a damp Porto dorm with snorers, I switched to a budget hotel in Lisbon for $45 a night. Way better sleep and a private bathroom were worth the extra $15 - what do you guys prioritize, cost or comfort?

$45 a night for a hotel in Lisbon? Man, I gotta say that blows my mind. I just did a hostel in Barcelona for $50 a night and it was still a dorm with bunk beds. I'd kill for a private bathroom at that price. Maybe I need to plan my next trip around Portugal instead.
