I finally learned why you never eat at a hotel breakfast buffet in Cancun before a morning tour

Last March I grabbed a quick breakfast at the Hotel Riu Palace before a 7am cenote trip, and within two hours I was stuck in a tour van with no bathroom for 45 miles. The scrambled eggs were lukewarm and the fruit sat out way too long, which I didn't think about until I felt that first cramp. Has anyone else gotten caught by a cheap hotel breakfast ruining a paid excursion?

That exact Riu Palace breakfast got me too back in 2019. I always thought people were overreacting about hotel buffet food in Mexico, figured it was fine for a quick bite. Then I ate some of those watery scrambled eggs and a piece of melon that tasted like it had been sitting out since the night before. My girlfriend and I were on a snorkeling trip an hour later and I spent the whole boat ride clenching up and praying we'd stop at a beach with a bathroom. Never again touching those lukewarm hotel eggs before any kind of tour.

Wait, is the real pro tip to never eat buffet eggs ANYWHERE before a 7am tour?
