I used to book flights 6 months ahead, now I wait 6 weeks

Everyone in travel groups says book early for the best deals. I did that for years and kept overpaying. Last year I tested waiting till 45 days out for a trip to Austin and saved $120 on the round trip. Now I check Google Flights and set alerts instead of booking blind. It's not perfect but I've saved around $400 total since switching. Has anyone else had better luck with last minute bookings than the early bird method?

Started doing the same thing last year. Turns out panicking 6 weeks out has been way better for my wallet than panicking 6 months out.

Procrastination pays off sometimes, doesn't it?

Had a buddy who kept putting off buying his mom's Christmas gift until December 23rd every single year. He ended up finding this random vintage brooch at a thrift store for like 8 bucks last year, and she cried when she opened it. Said it looked just like one her grandmother used to wear. Dude's been bragging about it for months now, says procrastination is his secret superpower or something.
