My $3 'luxury' hotel upgrade in Bangkok that was just a broom closet
I used to book the cheapest room online without checking the photos... ended up in a windowless space next to the elevator shaft with a mop bucket. Now I always cross-reference the hotel name on a map app to see the actual building layout and guest photos from the street view. It changed after that trip because I realized a 'city view' room could literally be a view of a brick wall. Has anyone else found a weird trick to avoid getting the absolute worst room in a place?

Check the floor plan on the hotel's own website before you book. Some places list the square meters for each room type. If the "superior" room is only 15 square meters, you know it's basically a bed with a door.

Young.kim has a point about checking square meters, but is it really that big a deal? I've slept in plenty of tight hotel rooms and it's fine if you're just crashing for the night. A 15 square meter room still has a bed and a bathroom, which covers the basics. People act like they need a palace for a two-day business trip.

Yeah I used to think like that too... but then I got stuck in one of those "superior" rooms for a week on a work trip. Couldn't even open my suitcase all the way. Now I always check the size first.
