Noticed hostel kitchens in Lisbon all have the same rule about labeling food

Stayed at three different hostels in Lisbon over two weeks and every single one had the same system. You write your name and checkout date on your food bag or it gets tossed the next morning. First place I thought it was just strict, but after seeing it everywhere I realized it's pretty smart. Saves arguments and nobody wastes money buying stuff that got thrown out by accident. Does your favorite hostel do this too or is it just a Portugal thing?
