Noticed something at a hostel in Barcelona last month that saved me a lot of money

I was staying at this hostel in the Gothic quarter and saw a bunch of people using a shared grocery bag hanging on the wall. Turned out guests would leave food they didn't finish before checking out. I grabbed a half loaf of bread and some eggs for breakfast the next day. No need to buy my own stuff. Does your hostel ever do something like that or is it just a fluke?

Yeah the food sharing thing is pretty common in hostels, always worth checking the community shelf first.

And yeah @fiona985, it's a nice little hack when you're running low on cash or just forgot to grab something at the store.

Gotta say, I'm not really sure this is as big a deal as people make it out to be. I've seen those community shelves in a bunch of hostels and honestly, half the time it's just stale crackers and a half-eaten jar of peanut butter. Like, sure, if you're really desperate and a loaf of bread is gonna save your trip, go for it, but I wouldn't plan my breakfast around it. Feels like one of those things that sounds better on paper than it actually works out in practice. And you gotta be careful with stuff like eggs in a shared bin, man, that's just asking for a bad morning.
