Pro tip: a local in Prague told me my 'free' walking tour was actually hurting the guides

They explained that the big companies keep most of the money, so the guides rely on tips. Now I just find a guide at the start and offer them 10 euros directly for a private tour. Has anyone else found a better way to handle this?

Actually did something similar in Berlin, but the guide told me that approach can get them in trouble with their company if they're caught. It's a tricky spot. Maybe a better way is to just take the normal free tour and then tip really well at the end, like 15 or 20 per person. That way they get the cash directly and there's no risk for them.

Heard a friend got a guide fired in Rome for that direct pay thing, which totally lines up with what @jennifer204 said. Now I just do the tour and hand over a big tip.

I mean I get what @jennifer204 is saying but cash upfront feels more direct to me.
