PSA: Using a cashback app for hostel booking led to a funny roomie situation.

The extra dollars were nice, but the stories were priceless.

Honestly, that shift in thinking is the whole magic of budget travel. Trading a bit of comfort for wild stories, like @lunaf67 found, is often the real payoff. The planned part is just the setup for the unplanned stuff you actually remember.

Yeah I booked a six bed dorm through one of those apps last year to save like twelve bucks. Ended up in a room with five guys who were all on the same soccer team touring Europe. They were cool about it, but I was definitely the odd one out listening to their inside jokes about matches for a week. Still got free tickets to a game from them though, so it worked out.

I always had a strict rule about booking only female dorms in hostels to avoid awkwardness. Your story about being the only one with that soccer team actually sounds kind of fun in the end. I used to think mixing in a big co-ed room would just be uncomfortable and not worth the small savings. But getting those free tickets and being included, even as the outsider, is a pretty good memory. It makes me reconsider if my rule is too strict and if I'm missing out on some random adventures. Maybe the weird mix-up is part of the point.
