Saw a $12 hostel in Bangkok beat my $70 hotel booking

Last month I landed in Bangkok with a prepaid hotel near Khao San Road that looked fine online but was loud and grimy. Second night I walked past a hostel with a sign out front saying 350 baht a night, about 12 bucks. I paid for one night just to check it, got a clean bunk, AC that actually worked, and free pad thai at breakfast. The hotel had a pool but I still felt ripped off. Anyone else ditching hotels for hostels on solo trips and finding better value?

Wait till you find out the free walking tours they offer, that alone beats any hotel amenity. Hostels got the social side locked down too, you end up saving money and making friends.
