Shoutout to the guy in Prague who told me to just ask for a local menu

I was there last fall and thought it was a tourist trap line. He said to walk two blocks back from the main square and look for a chalkboard with Czech words only. Found a place with a three course lunch for 250 crowns, about $11. The waiter brought out soup, roast pork, and dumplings while the table next to me paid triple for a burger. Has anyone else had a language barrier work in their favor like that?

My cousin in Naples taught me to look for the "menu per residenti" sign, which is basically a local's menu. We got a full seafood spread for what tourists paid for one plate of pasta. It feels like finding a secret door in plain sight. Have you tried asking for local menus in other places since Prague?

Hell yeah, that's the move. I always ask if there's a daily special or local menu first thing.

Learned to ask for the "menu del dia" in Spain the same way.
