Staying in hostels saved me $400 on a trip to Chicago

I needed to visit Chicago for five days last fall and almost booked a hotel near the Loop for around $150 a night. Then a friend told me about the HI Chicago Hostel on Congress Parkway. I was nervous about sharing a room with strangers but it only cost $45 a night for a bunk in a six person dorm. The place was clean and quiet after 10 PM plus they had a free breakfast of bagels and coffee every morning. I ended up saving over $300 compared to the hotel and spent that extra cash on deep dish pizza and a museum pass. Has anyone else tried hostels in US cities and found them worth the savings?

Hard pass on sharing a room with strangers. You saved money but you also had zero privacy and had to worry about your stuff getting stolen while you slept. I would rather pay the extra cash and actually relax in my own space.

Did you bring earplugs and a sleep mask? I've done hostels in a few cities and those two things make or break the experience more than anything.

Earplugs are non negotiable. Game changer.
