The hostel receptionist in Lisbon who said 'just ask the locals'

I was stressing over a $50 train ticket to Porto until the guy behind the desk told me to walk two blocks and catch the local bus for $8. Has anyone else had travel plans flipped by a random person working the front desk?

The last time I took a front desk person's advice I ended up on a chicken bus in rural Guatemala with a live duck under the seat. So yeah, sometimes that "just ask the locals" tip can save you forty bucks or land you in a situation where you're wondering if that bird is a fellow passenger or tomorrow's lunch. Lisbon hostel people clearly have their stuff together though, that's a solid save on the train fare.

Guatemala doesn't have chicken buses.

Hang on, I've seen those buses all over Guatemala, they're literally everywhere between towns. Old American school buses painted up like rainbows with Jesus stickers and people hanging out the windows, that's pretty much the definition of a chicken bus if you ask me. Maybe you were in a different part of the country or something, but they're definitely a thing down there.
