Tried the hostel dorm hack in Prague last summer, ended up in a quiet 4-bed room for $12 a night

I figured a 10-bed dorm would be the cheapest bet, but I asked the front desk about a smaller room and they had one for barely more. Learned that booking directly with hostels instead of aggregators can get you better deals and quieter vibes. Anyone else had luck with this kind of room upgrade trick?

Called ahead to ask about off-season prices and got the whole 4-bed room to myself for a week.

Sounds like you caught a good deal but how much are you really saving if you're paying for a whole 4-bed place you don't need... I just drove through that area last month and the off-season "deals" still felt like they were pricing things like it was peak summer. Plus you gotta think about the cleaning fees and all the extra taxes they tack on. Not saying you got ripped off but it's probably not the crazy steal you think it is.

Yeah the cleaning fees and taxes are what really sneak up on you. I've found that asking about "total price including everything" up front saves a lot of headache later. Even with all that though, splitting the whole place between a couple people can still beat a hotel if you call at the right time.
