Update: I used to book the first cheap flight I found to Bangkok, but after getting stuck with a 14-hour layover in Dubai, I now cross-check the total travel time on Google Flights before hitting buy.

Has anyone else found a good trick for spotting those sneaky long layovers that aren't obvious on the initial booking page?

My cousin once had a 22-hour layover in Frankfurt without realizing it.

Ugh, @taylorc40's cousin's story is a nightmare! I got burned like that once, too. The booking site showed a great price for a flight to London, but the "short layover" was actually 19 hours in Reykjavik. I learned to always, always check the full itinerary details page, not just the first summary. Sometimes they bury the actual layover times in a tiny link. Now I add up the hours myself before I get excited about a cheap ticket.

Yeah, they really count on you not doing the math. A "short layover" that's basically a full day in an airport is not a layover, it's a forced vacation you didn't plan for. I'd rather pay a bit more to actually get where I'm going instead of getting a free tour of every duty-free shop in Iceland. Those sites make it a puzzle on purpose so you click before you think.
