Used to book hostels the night before, now I plan 3 weeks ahead

Back in 2015 I would just show up in a new city and find a bed for $15 a night. Now with everything booked solid since 2022, I locked in a spot in Lisbon last month 23 days early and still paid $45. Anyone else miss the days of spontaneous budget trips?

Heard some Lisbon hostels now cost more than a budget hotel used to.

Chill out dude, its really not that bad lol. I booked a hostel in Barcelona two days before last week and got a bed for $30. Maybe just pick somewhere less hyped than Lisbon?

Two days before" and $30 sounds like you got lucky, not that the system works. Lisbon hostels have been creeping up for a reason. Maybe Barcelona's just getting it right, but "just pick somewhere less hyped" is like telling people to just stop wanting to see cool stuff.
