Vent: I almost paid $80 for a taxi from the Rome airport before trying one weird trick

After landing at Fiumicino, I found the official taxi line was quoting a flat 80 euro fare to my hotel, so I walked 5 minutes to the main road outside the airport property and hailed a regular city cab using the meter, which ended up costing only 48 euros for the exact same trip. Has anyone else found a similar 'airport taxi zone' price drop in other cities?

Used to think that was just how it worked.

Wait, is it actually that big of a deal though? People make it sound way more serious than it probably is. It's probably not worth all the stress.

Seriously? I used to brush it off too, @dylanh52. Then I saw what happens when you ignore it. It's not just stress, it's real problems that pile up fast. The hassle later is ten times worse than dealing with it now. Trust me, it's a big deal.
