A stranger's comment about her grocery list changed my monthly plan

Last Tuesday at the bus stop, a woman in line was telling her friend she only shops the perimeter of the store and never steps foot in the middle aisles. I thought that was extreme, but then she said she saves about $80 a month doing it. I tried it for two weeks with my usual list from Aldi in Columbus, and I was shocked how many things I crossed off because they were just wants, not needs. The middle aisles are where the impulse buys live, like that bag of pretzels or the fancy sauce I never finish. I still go down a few of those rows for canned beans and coffee, but I time it with a list and a timer on my phone. My last grocery run came to $47 instead of my usual $90. Has anyone else found a simple rule like this that quietly cut their food bill without feeling like a diet?
